Unification of anaesthesia in Europe -still a place for subspecialist societies like EACTA?
Spring 2000
Olav FM Sellevold MD EACTA Past Chairman, International affairs
During the last years there has been a trend in the major organizations of anaesthesia in Europe to try to unify forces. This has resulted in the creation of the Federation of Anaesthesiology in Europe. The organizations have different history which influence their thinking. The European Academy (EAA) was formed to promote education and its quality control. The Academy has been very successful in creating the Diploma Exam. The Academy has initiated a system of quality control of education centres in Europe which is an ongoing programme in coop- eration with the UEMS, the specialist organization of the EU /EAA. The European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) was formed to engage all anaesthesiologists in Europe through personal membership and to create one large congress after the American model. CENSA is the European branch of the world federation (WFSA) with a main purpose of being a link between the nation- al societies of anaesthesiology and to form a Eu- ropean congress between the world congress i.e. every second year.
An obvious driving force behind the unification are the finances. Commercial sponsorship for congresses through educational grants for symposia and through participation in exhibitions of products have become a necessity for the professional organizer.
