Location

Montepellier is a city in southern France. It is the capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, as well as the Hérault department. Montpellier is the 8th largest city of the country, and is also the fastest growing city in France over the past 25 years.

Language

French is the primary language in Montpellier however most regions which see a lot of tourism will have people working there with a decent knowledge of the major European languages.

Montpellier is situated in southern France and has a warm Mediterranean climate with warm dry summers and mild, sometimes wet winters. The average temperature in September is about 25 degrees Celsius

Opening Hours

Grocery Stores

Opening hours for grocery stores and supermarkets are Monday to Saturday and will stay open until about 19:00p.m and tend to close on Sundays.

General Shops

Shopping centres such as the open air shopping centre called the "Odysseum" will open from 10am to 8pm

Banks

Banks are usually open from 9am to 4:30pm-5pm, Monday to Friday. Some banks close from 1pm to 3pm, and some are open Saturday mornings.

Post Office

Post offices are usually open from 8am or 8.30am to 5pm or 6pm in the cities on weekdays, and Saturdays from 8am until midday.

Pharmacies

French pharmacies are identified by a neon green cross, lit when open, and normally keep shop hours opening from 9am - 1pm and 3pm - 7pm. In larger cities there will always be a certain number that remain open 24 hours.

Smoking

Smoking is banned in all public places in France such as museums, restaurants etc.

Tipping

Normally in Montpellier if the service is good you tip 10% and if the service is just ok you would usually just tip 5%. However, if you are a guest you are not obliged to tip.
