Subspecialty Committees

The Association has subspecialty committees that represent the main domains of interest for EACTA members (previously called subcommittees). There are 8 committees as listed below, but definition and numbers can evolve with changes in domain of interest of EACTA members.

The committees contribute to the scientific programme of the Annual Meetings and may propose educational and research programmes, guidelines, recommendations, surveys or collaborations.

Membership in these committees is open to all EACTA members (find a list of all Subspecialty Committees in your vEACTA Area after being logged in).

The terms of reference defining purposes and activities of the committee are edited by its members and approved by the RC on recommendation of the BoD.

Each committee will be chaired for a three-year term of office by an EACTA member. The office is renewable for one additional and consecutive term of three-years. Chairpersons will be proposed by the members of the committee on the basis of the candidates’ well-known involvement in the field of the committee and appointed by the BoD. The chairperson will be responsible for communication with the BoD.

Suggestions, questions or any requests from the committees will be addressed at each BoD meeting.

Chairpersons will provide the BoD and RC with an annual written report of the committee’s activities over the previous year which is to be submitted one-month before the BoD Meeting held at the time of the Annual Meeting. The chairperson will be supported by 3 committee board members who are elected by the committee members.

TEE Template for adults

Dear friends and colleagues,

It has been pondered a while regarding a universal TEE template for intraoperative use in the operating room. Although it is very challenging to include a template which will be recognized wholly without its pitfalls, we are now reached a consensus where we have, as a group from Echo subcommittee, been able to provide you with a TEE template for intraoperative use.

This TEE template has been formulated keeping in mind all the present guidelines available for intraoperative TEE in the operating room/cath.lab. After extensive inputs from all members of the subcommittee, we have been able to offer you with a TEE template which can be universally used in Europe.

This is to prevent any discrepancies of echocardiography standards performed in the operating room. This also enables the user of the template to conform to the existing guidelines and standards for performing echocardiography in an operative set-up. This template can also be used as a guide in fulfilling your requirements for certification of TEE examination.

We hope that this TEE template will provide you with the necessities of performing intraoperative TEE, and will be a guiding tool for both advanced and enthusiastic anaesthetists/ Echo cardiographers at the start of their practice.

Hope you enjoy the same as we do, and appreciate your feedback.

With best wishes,
Dr. Chirojit Mukherjee MD PhD FASE MBA

Chairman, EACTA ECHO subcommittee

TEE Template, paediatric

Dear colleagues,

Please find for download a template for an echocardiography report to be used in congenital cardiac surgery and in the perioperative treatment of patients with grown-up congenital heart disease.

It can be applied both for transthoracic and for transoesophageal echocardiography, and should be appropriate for use in the operation theatre, the catheterization laboratory/angiography suite and on the intensive care unit.

The template is the result of an intense discussion within the EACTA Paediatric & Congenital committee and the EACTA ECHO committee and should therefore represent a consensus of the current state of the art in perioperative echocardiography for congenital heart disease. This helps to prevent major discrepancies in echocardiography standards applied in the perioperative setting and aims to create a pan-European standard.

We also hope that the template will provide both advanced practitioners and enthusiastic anaesthetists/ echo cardiographers at the start of their practice with a structured approach that will ultimately help to improve the perioperative outcome of our patients.

The template can also be used to fulfil your requirements for certification in echocardiography.

We hope that you enjoy the template, and sincerely appreciate your feedback.

With kind regards,
Prof. Dr. Steffen Rex

Chairman, EACTA Paediatric & Congenital subcommittee

Patient blood management (PBM) in cardiac surgery is an evidence-based, multidisciplinary approach that aims for maintenance of haemostasis and minimization of blood loss in patients who are at risk for allogeneic blood transfusion. PBM transcends individual medical disciplines, and consists of a chain of care that spans the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative period.

PBM in cardiac surgery should be considered as separate entity, as the interaction between the cardiothoracic surgeon, anaesthesiologist and clinical perfusionist, the surgical procedures, the unique patient characteristics and the impact of cardiopulmonary bypass distinguishes this discipline from other surgical specialties.

The mission of the subcommittee Haemostasis and Transfusion is to promote educational and research programmes in the field of PBM and to contribute to evidence-based guidance for the clinician in involved in cardiac surgery.

Patient Blood Management Guideline

In a joint effort, the European Association of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) and European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology (EACTA) worked together towards a common guideline for Patient Blood Management (PBM) in cardiac surgery.

The PBM guideline presents an evidence-based, multidisciplinary approach that aims for maintenance of haemostasis and minimization of blood loss in patients who might need allogeneic blood transfusion. In addition to a description of the current evidence for PBM in cardiac surgery, the guideline provides practical solutions for daily problems in this field. The guidelines also underline that further improvement of the evidence-base of PBM in cardiac surgery is warranted.

We hope that this guideline might aid clinicians in their daily practice, and contributes to a multidisciplinary approach with respect to patient haemostasis and transfusion practice in cardiac surgery.

Warm regards,

Christa Boer

Patient blood management in cardiac surgery relies on a multidisciplinary and multifactorial approach aiming for a reduction in perioperative blood loss and allogeneic blood transfusions. In a joint effort the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiologists (EACTA) and European Association of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) initiated the elaboration of a European guideline on this topic in order to support current practice and summarize evidence for blood preservation techniques in cardiac surgery.

Social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter etc have become important means of communication for our members and EACTA has to harness them to its advantage. Social media should be used to deliver the three main themes of EACTA that are education, science and research in cardiac, thoracic and vascular anaesthesia and critical care (CTVA&CC). It should also be used for communication and sharing of knowledge and experience of CTVA&CC. In addition, the platforms should be used to advertise and promote EACTA meetings and activities so raising its profile and attracting new members. However, the development of social media platforms cannot be done in isolation and will require the input of the speciality committee. Development of social media platforms must be a priority so as use them to the advantage of all EACTA’s goals.

Aim of the Social Networking Task Force is to promote EACTA’s three main themes (Science, Education and Research) through social media.

Objectives:

  1. To increase the visibility of EACTA so as to attract new members and increase membership number
  2. To exchange ideas and knowledge with others who share a common interest in cardiac, thoracic and vascular anaesthesia and critical care (CTVA&CC)
  3. To build enduring and mutually beneficial relationships with others who share an interest in CTVA&CC
  4. To promote medical education programmes such as EACTA eAcademy and eLearning
  5. To increase the visibility of the EACTA/ESA fellowship programme in adult and paediatric CTVA&CC
  6. To share clinical experiences and gain advice
  7. To increase the involvement of the Speciality Committees in subgroups of the social media groups
  8. To undertake surveys beyond EACTA’s members and for marketing research
  9. To publicise EACTA’s scientific activities, education opportunities, and research grants/projects
