Gothenburg, Sweden.

Cardiothoracic & Vascular Anaesthesia and Critical Care Trainee Course

Cardiothoracic and vascular anaesthesia and critical care (CTVA&CC) is a relatively young subspecialty that originated form anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. In the last 20-25 years this subspecialty has accumulated considerable expertise that is of value to all specialist practicing in the areas of cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery and postoperative critical care. For this reason it is surprising that in most European countries have no formal training programme in CTVA&CC and it is for the most part, left to the individual hospitals. EACTA Annual Congress CTVA&CC is often unsuitable for trainees as it is focused on science and addresses narrow fields of interest as it is considered that delegates will already have all the relevant core knowledge. Furthermore, many general anaesthesiologists and critical care trainees are often not at ease with the specialist management of cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery patients and their related problems and would benefit from additional teaching in the area.

EACTA being the representative medical association for CTVA&CC in Europe is committed to education. Therefore EACTA proposes to run a a series theoretical courses in CTVA&CC that will be delivered by recognized experts in their domain and have programmes that will be compliant with the EACTA curriculum in CTVA&CC. It is planned that the courses will be videoed then webcasted as an e-learning course at a latter date.

This year in Gothenburg, it is the second Trainee Course to be run by EACTA but it is planed to have an ongoing cycle of programmes over a 3-5 year cycle so that the majority of the theoretical knowledge required to be a practicing cardiac, thoracic or vascular anaesthesiologist and critical care specialist is covered.

Aim

To provide a theoretical educational programme covering the most essential domains of CTVA & CC. This trainee course can be either taken independently or as a part of a clinical training programme in the subspecialty of CTVA&CC.

Target group

Trainees in anaesthesia and critical care as well as those specifically training to specialise in CTVA&CC.

Programme

The programme will be compliant with the EACTA curriculum in CTVA&CC and cover the most relevant subjects in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac, thoracic and vascular disease. Future programmes for Trainee Courses will cover new areas in the curriculum until it is covered and then the programmes will cycle around again.

Lecturers

The lecturers will be selected on the basis of their proven educational ability and experience in CTVA&CC.

Evaluation

After each one, delegates to the Trainee Course will be invited to evaluate the programme format, lecture content and its delivery so that future courses may be tailored to the needs to trainees.

I look forward to meeting you in Gothenburg at EACTA’s Trainee Course.

R Peter Alston,

Chair of the Educational Committee.
